Massage makes you feel relaxed and rejuvenated, but its benefits only start there. Relaxation of tense muscles can relieve pain, increase lymphatic flow and bring fresh oxygen to muscle tissue. By increasing the efficiency of your metabolism, massage can stimulate digestion and elimination, thus speeding the flow of toxins from your body.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Poor lymphatic drainage has been linked to two of the most common forms of cancer–breast and prostate, and plays a pivotal role in the metastasis of cancer throughout the body. You should consider lymphatic drainage as a problem if you have any of the following ailments: high blood pressure; chronic fatigue; depression; heart disease; arthritis; heaviness and/or tension in a limb; aching, bursting pain, or over-all joint stiffness; skin problems–such as eczema. Facilitating lymphatic drainage, through this specialized technique, is one of the best things you can do as a health protection.

To understand this massage, think about moving water. The lymphatic system consists of various sizes of lymph vessels and nodes, carrying lymphatic fluid and spanning the body like rivers and streams. The system is part of the immune system, as the lymphatic fluid carries cells that “eat” viruses, bacteria, and other harmful substances The lymphatic system does not have a pump of its own, like the blood vessels which have the heart. They depend on auxiliary help to move the fluid around the body, such as exercise, breathing, muscle contractions.

This massage technique is specific for moving, and thus cleansing, lymphatic fluid. It uses superficial, gentle strokes to promote the flow of lymphatic fluids. It mobilizes waste and fluid back into the body’s drainage system so that they can be more effectively eliminated. As well, it increases immunity, promotes healing, and balances fluid metabolism in body.

This massage is especially useful for those individuals that feel that their system is sluggish, or those who seem to get regular colds and flu. It is also recommended for people who lead sedentary lifestyles, or those who want to reduce puffiness or swelling. It is often recommended by Doctors for those who have just had plastic surgery of some sort, or breast surgery. It is a perfect technique for everyone to help maintain health and improve the beauty of the skin. It is profoundly relaxing. There are health conditions that are contraindications to this massage. if you have health conditions, please consult with La Casa’s acupuncturist and lymphatic drainage specialist, Jennifer Chen, on the appropriateness of the massage.
